Top-Down Tile-Based War Tanks
At some point, we all make a tile-based game, right? And it would be great to have some starter art to make the game look decent while we are working on gameplay and stuff.Well, here you go!
One of Ray’s tutorial writers needed a set of sprites for a top-down tile-based game, and of course you all get them too!
This is just a basic pack; it doesn’t have fancy stuff like edges for the different backgrounds. It is really meant as placeholder art, but if you don’t need the fancy edges you are welcome to use it in your finished game too!
Suggested Game Play
It’s a tile-based game… what more can I say? You could use this for a Tower of Defense-style game, or a scrolling game with multiple players… pretty much anything that requires top-down tiles. If you do make something with this art, I’d love to hear about it!
There are three types of tanks, so that you can give each type different strengths or powers. Each type comes in three different colors. The idea is that each color (red, blue, and grey) would be an army. Each tank is in two parts: the base and the turret. The idea was that the base will point in the direction of motion, while the turret will point in the direction of shooting.
Three-army concept: to round out your army beyond tanks, you get a soldier (with an armcannon) for each army, as well as two bonus objects, which I imagined to be a base and a powerup. Use them however you want!
There are 6 backgrounds, which you can use as grass, dirt, stone, walls, water, etc. I also included a few extra objects you can use as rocks or gems or trees.
Game Pack Contents:
All sprites are 32×32 pixels except for the tank turrets and the bullets (turrets and bullets are just as large as they need to be since they will be layered on the tank bases or shot across the screen, respectively).
- 6 Background tiles
- 9 tank bases: 3 red, 3 blue, 3 grey
- 9 tank turrets, 3 red, 3 blue, 3 grey
- 4 bullets: red, blue, grey, and black
- 3 soldiers: red, blue, and grey
- Bonus object 1: red, blue grey
- Bonus object 2: red, blue, grey
- Bonus object 3: brown, green, orange
- tree/foliage
- mockups of the tanks, etc.
And a preview!
I hope this gets you rolling on your own top-down tile-based war game! If you have questions, or suggestions for future tile sets, please leave a comment!

Thanks Vicki! I’ll probably use these in one of my next prototypes… if I can ever figure out cocos2d, or even Stencyl. I’ve had a tile based tank game waiting in the wings for many years.
awesome thanks for providing a complete set, i’m working on a javascript, jquery and php game now, might turn it into a visual PBBG.
Thanks a bunch for this, I’ll probably use them in a 2d srpg game I’m making.
Bookmarked your page, keep it up!
Thanks a lot for this art. I will be using this in a tank shooter/maze style game for Android for my final year dissertation. I will then create 3D images based on your representation for future developments
Awesome everyone, can’t wait to see the games that come from it!
